This central urban green space, 28 hectares in size, was created as a catalyst to promote the “greenification” of Shanghai’s modern downtown area. Referencing the historical relationship of Shanghai to both the sea and the Huangpu River, the concept of a “water story” linked to the green network was introduced. The design is inspired by the presence of an ancient river that once traversed the site. From this vision of green space and water arose what became known as the “Green and Blue Concept”. This gesture attempts to bring cultural significance to the park while providing renewed interest in all components of the park and surrounding neighbourhoods.
